Companies using Python in 2023

Tech companies, Banks, Financial Services, and Startups - all are at some point considering migrating to Python-based applications. Studies show most Analytics firms will have at least one business unit running on Python by 2025. It is surely giving tough competition to R, SPSS, and other analysis tools.

Who are these major Companies

Close to 8k companies, and 200k developers work daily on Python ( source: stack share).  and it is growing more than 10% a year. However, most of the top Tech firms use Python consistently - Google, Facebook, NASA, Instagram, Stripe, SoundCloud, Netflix, Quora - the list goes on.

Quora, the knowledge-sharing platform, started the project with a mindset of using the tech stack of C#, JAVA, and .NET. However,  soon they realized the lack of enough resources and high development time, and unstable software ecosystem. The cost would be high and the pain will be more. They decided on Python keeping critical applications in C++.

Google is a Python supporter since its inception and sponsors conferences like PyCON and EuroPython (the oldest running py conferences). YouTube (previously using PHP), Google Adwords ( the main income source), Google API, and Google web app ( powering Google Maps and Drive) are all using Python in the background.

NASA is using Python for rapid data analysis and data streaming. NASA is investing in open-source technologies for a decade and the SunPy project is one of these open-source software libraries for solar physics using the Python framework. High-performance computing at NASA uses Python-based data analysis tools for climate simulation in space and beyond.

Netflix does a lot of research on ML and recommendation system which are all backed by Python.

What are the top sectors using Python?

Although the enterprise software market is still dominated by C++ and other programming languages, Python is coming up with new and enhanced features to make its presence. However, Data analytics, ML applications, Big Data Tools, Scientific experimenting, Statistical Modelling, Financial Analysis, AI applications, Recommender systems, Medical imaging, Language modeling, and smart devices application - all of these sectors have a preference for Python over other technologies.

Only mission-critical applications which need super-fast execution, Python might not be the best choice.

Is it only a trend?

Many technologies come and go. So, one might think is it a trend or have some reasons behind it? Technologies evolve and no doubt that there will be more and more programming languages coming up in the near future.

However, many consider Python would be relevant for a long time because of its simplicity and other benefits. Therefore, it is never too late to start learning and exploring more career opportunities in this domain.
